František Hruška is a Czech composer, sound artist, poet and performer working at the intersection of electroacoustic music, sound art, sound installations and experimental audiovisual performance. In his work, he combines DIY electronics, self-built instruments, field recordings, light and spatial work with sound. He has long been dedicated to improvisation, composition and interdisciplinary projects connecting music, performance and visual art.

František studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and sound design at Masaryk University.

František Hruška (1998, Ostrava) is a Czech sound artist, composer, performer and poet living in Brno. His work oscillates between electroacoustic music, sound art, improvisation and experimental performance. He studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, then worked as a musical instrument developer at Bastl Instruments and has long been dedicated to original work in the field of sound, music and interdisciplinary projects.

In his live performances, he works with analogue electronics, self-built instruments, light and improvisation. His work focuses on the physical presence of sound, space, playfulness and conscious listening. In addition to live performances, he creates electroacoustic, acousmatic and fixed-media compositions using field recordings, obscure sound objects and detailed work with sound texture.

He has presented his work at festivals, concerts and exhibitions across Europe in the context of contemporary music, sound art, experimental electronics and independent cultural scenes.

In addition to sound creation, he also writes poetry. He debuted with the collection Převážná doba (Větrné mlýny, 2021) and his texts have been published in anthologies, literary magazines and online media and translated into several languages.

In my work I treat sound as a physical and imaginative presence in space. I am drawn to sound's capacity to transform the perception of time, space and attention, and to create situations of intense listening.

Through electroacoustic composition, improvisation, self-built electronic instruments, light and performative elements, I create sound situations that oscillate between concert, installation and live performance.

I often depart from obscure sound objects, analogue electronics, field recordings and the principles of playfulness, chance and spontaneous communication.

Sound ecology and the everyday poetry of sounds play an important role in my practice — I move them into new contexts and relationships. I am interested in the tension between the organic and the electronic, between control and unpredictability, and in the moment when listening becomes a physical and shared experience.

My work is shaped by experimental music, DIY culture, contemporary electroacoustic composition, popular music and interdisciplinary collaboration across artistic forms.

about my name.

o mém jméně

I was born under a good constellation of stars in may of 1998, right after the Czech national ice hockey team won the biggest tournament in the history of the sport. But even though our god-like goalkeeper was called Dominik and the nation wanted him for president & everybody named their male offspring Dominik, my lovely parents have decided to call me František. And I respect it, it’s something you have to accept and live with. You may not agree but the parents do have a right to give a name. After all, it’s just a name. So why are we talking about it for so long?
